The HP Smart app is the main software for your printer. Install it on the device you want to print from, and then use it to set up the printer connection. By installing the HP Smart app, you also install all drivers necessary to print and scan.

Install the HP Smart app

Get the HP Smart app for Android, Apple iOS or iPadOS, Windows, and Mac.

  1. Download the HP Smart app from 123.hp.com (Android, Apple iOS, iPadOS), HP Smart - Microsoft Store (Windows), or HP Smart - Mac App Store (Mac).

    Note:

Having trouble downloading the app? Go to Unable to download and install the HP Smart printer app for more information.

  2. If you are setting up HP Smart for the first time, you must create or sign in to an HP account to access all printer functions.

Set up your printer using the HP Smart app

Add your printer to HP Smart and follow the guided setup to connect to your computer or mobile device.

Note:

For HP+ printers, there might be additional guided steps required to complete printer setup, such as HP+ choice selection and HP account creation.

  1. If you are setting up the printer on a Wi-Fi network, prepare the printer for setup.

    • Place the printer and the computer or mobile device near the Wi-Fi router.

    • Turn on Wi-Fi on your computer or mobile device and connect to your network. If the computer is connected to the network with an Ethernet cable, temporarily disconnect the cable and use the Wi-Fi connection during the setup.

    • Enable Bluetooth on the computer or mobile device so that HP Smart can detect the printer during the setup.

    • For Windows computers, turn on Windows Update to make sure Windows is always up to date.

    • After installing HP Smart for iOS and Android, enable the mobile device location service and allow the app to use your location to detect the printer and offer solutions during setup.

    • Multiple printers within range of your device might display during setup. Make sure to select the correct printer. Do not select a printer with DIRECT in its name, as it is only for Wi-Fi Direct connections.

  2. Open HP Smart.

    • If this is the first time you are opening HP Smart, the app attempts to detect and set up the printer.

    • If this is not the first time you are opening HP Smart, click Add Printer or the plus sign to find the printer.

  3. On the connection type screen, select Wi-Fi, USB, or Network. The options displayed vary depending on your computer or mobile device. Follow the steps to complete the setup.

If you are using a Wi-Fi connection and your printer is not found, continue to the next step.

  4. Restore Wi-Fi setup mode.

    • Most printers with a touchscreen display or menu: Open the Wireless HP printer setup (HP Smart app) (1) or Setup HP printer setup (HP Smart app) (2) menu, select Network setup or Settings, and then select Restore Network Settings.

    • Printers without a touchscreen display or menu: Go to Restore Wi-Fi setup mode on your HP printer to restore default settings by pressing the buttons on your printer.

  5. Within two hours, close then re-open HP Smart, and then add the printer again.

  6. Follow the guided setup screens to complete the printer setup.

Make your HP printer more secure (wireless only)

Secure your printer to prevent others from accessing it.

  • Make sure the network, printer, and device are connected to a secure HP printer setup (HP Smart app) (3) connection. Avoid connecting the printer to open, public networks.

  • Use a strong password for your Wi-Fi network (your router), and change it on a regular basis.

  • Create a unique printer display name to easily identify your printer when there are several printers on a network.

  • Limit access from others for printer features that enable remote printing, such as Print Anywhere or HP ePrint.

For more information, go to Secure your HP printer against unwanted access.

What are the requirements to set up a printer using the HP Smart app?

Review connection and software version requirements for the HP Smart app.

Why do I need to sign in or create an account to use HP Smart?

An HP Smart account allows you to print and scan from the HP Smart app, as well as access to premium features such as mobile fax.

You can also use HP Smart to remotely manage, share access, and print from anywhere with a compatible HP printer.

Why can't I connect my wireless printer or print over the network?

Check network issues and setup requirements if the printer is not found during software installs or when wireless print jobs fail.

  • Poor network connection: Move the printer and computer or mobile device closer to the wireless router, and then check if the signal quality improved. Try opening a website to see if the internet connection is working properly. If Wi-Fi is slow or intermittent, restart the router by disconnecting the power cord, waiting 15 seconds, and then reconnecting the cord.

  • Printer is off or in sleep mode: Touch the control panel or press the Power button to wake the printer and put it in a ready state. Sometimes the printer status might display Offline when it is actually ready.

  • Check the printer connection status: Make sure the wireless signal is on, and the printer is connected to the same network as your computer or mobile device. If your printer has a light next to a Wireless icon or button HP printer setup (HP Smart app) (6), make sure the light is on. If it is off or blinks, the printer is disconnected from the network.

  • Reconnect the printer to the network: Place the printer within range of the Wi-Fi router signal, and then connect it to the network.

    • Printers with a touchscreen control panel: Open the Setup, Network, or Wireless settings menu, select Wireless Setup Wizard, and then follow the instructions to select the network name and enter the password.

    • Printers without a touchscreen control panel: Press and hold the Wireless button HP printer setup (HP Smart app) (7) for five seconds or until the wireless light starts to flash. Within two minutes, press and hold the WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) button on the router until the connection process begins. The printer Wireless light stops flashing when the connection completes.

    • HP Deskjet 6000 and 6400, ENVY 6000 and 6400, and Tango printers: Press and hold the Wi-Fi button HP printer setup (HP Smart app) (8) and the Power button on the back of the printer for five seconds until the blue bar flashes. Within two minutes, press and hold the WPS button on the router until the connection process begins. The blue bar stops flashing when the connection completes.

  • Restart devices: Restart the printer and the computer or mobile device to clear possible error conditions.

  • Print a Wireless Test Report: Search the HP Customer Support website for your printer model, and then search for self test page to find the document on how to print and evaluate the report.

  • Enable Bluetooth for an HP Smart app setup: Enable Bluetooth on your computer or mobile device so that HP Smart can detect the printer during the setup.

  • Wireless isolation could be causing your printer to appear offline. Check with your router manufacturer for more information.
